Over our first three years of tours at the Leopold Center, we’ve encountered a wide array of visitors, with interests and expertise as far-reaching as we could have imagined. Our tour program has hosted everyone from architects and engineers to foresters and policy makers. To better serve these diverse professional audiences, we’ve developed the Expert Tour Series, tailored to help visitors explore the many disciplines impacted by Leopold’s work with experts from those fields of study.

Crane Viewing on the Wisconsin River with Steve Swenson and Stan Temple
Tuesday, October 26th, 4:00pm - 7:00 pm
Program moved to Friday, October 29th (same time) due to high winds! Please call Steve Swenson at 608-393-7354 for more details.
Join ornithologist Stan Temple and ecologist Steve Swenson for a guided hike and crane viewing along the Wisconsin River. In Leopold's evocative essay "Marshland Elegy," he wrote about the coming of cranes and humans to the marshes when the waters receded, about early explorers and haymeadow farmers, then the epidemic of ditch-digging and land booming, and the resulting impoverishment of both cranes and humans. Three generations since Leopold's death, pilgrims from around the world can now see cranes in abundance at the Shack property, and elsewhere throughout the state. As the Sandhill cranes prepare for their winter migration south, they convene in large numbers along the banks of the Wisconsin River near the Leopold Shack. It's an amazing sight! Join Aldo Leopold Foundation Senior Fellow, noted ornithologist Stan Temple, and Aldo Leopold Foundation ecologist, Steve Swenson, for an evening with the cranes at the Shack. Prior registration is required. Register.
